What We Believe
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” - 2 Corinthians 5:17
- The Bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice.
- There is One God, eternal and self-existing in three persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) who are to be equally loved, honored, and adored.
- All mankind participated in Adam’s fall from his original sinless state and is thus lost in sin and totally helpless.
- The Sovereign God, for no other reason than His own unfathomable love and mercy, has chosen lost sinners from every nation to be redeemed by the quickening power of the Holy Spirit and through the atoning death and resurrection of His son, Jesus Christ.
- Those sinners whom the Spirit quickens, are born again, come to believe in Christ as Savior by the Word of God, become sons of God, and will persevere to the end.
- Justification is by faith and through it the undeserving sinner is clothed with the righteousness of Christ.
- The goal of God’s salvation in the life of the Christian is holiness, good works, and service for the glory of God.
- The Church is the Bride and Body of Christ consisting of all who make profession of their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ together with their children. The Church has been gifted and empowered by the Holy Spirit to gather and equip the called of God for ministry and service.
- At death the Christian’s soul passes immediately into the presence of God and the unbeliever’s soul is eternally separated from God unto condemnation.
- Baptism is a sign and seal of God’s covenant with the family and is properly administered to children of believers in their infancy as well as to those who come as adults to trust in Christ.
- Jesus Christ will return to earth, visibly and bodily, at a time when He is not expected, to consummate history and the eternal plan of God.
- The Gospel of God’s salvation in Jesus Christ must be published to all the world as a witness before He returns.

Chapelgate History
“This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness…” - Acts 7:38
From its inception, Chapelgate has been a church based upon prayer. 1894-1896
Six ladies, gathering in an upstairs apartment to pray, began a mission Sunday School. By 1896, this prayer power culminated in the establishment of North Avenue United Presbyterian Chapel.
Continuous growth resulted in several moves to ever larger facilities within the Baltimore metropolitan area 1951

One hundred fifty-five members built the Chapelgate Lane United Presbyterian Church at Chapelgate Lane & Edmonson Ave.
1960
With 375 members, a new chapel was built on North Rolling Road and was named Chapel Hill.
1976
Chapel Hill’s commitment to Biblical inerrancy inspired the congregation to prayerfully decide to resign from the United Presbyterian denomination. This courageous decision, involving the forfeiture of the church building, resulted in our installation into the PCA one year later as Chapelgate.
1980
As we grew to 650 members, we moved into a facility on St. John’s Lane. It became apparent that we would outgrow the premises but, by God’s gracious hand, we were provided with the property on Marriottsville Road. His grace continued by allowing us to sell the St. John’s Lane building and rent it back for Sunday worship as we awaited the building of our new church.
1991
We relocated to 2600 Marriottsville Road, Marriottsville with over 1,200 members. Chapelgate Christian Academy opened its doors to provide a quality middle school and high school alternative.
1995
A second wing at the Marriottsville site that doubled our available space was opened, greatly improving the conditions for our rapidly growing educational needs.
Chapelgate Government
“And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13
Chapelgate’s governing structure is made up of two bodies, the Session and Board of Deacons. Pastors, Elders, and Deacons are elected by Chapelgate’s membership.
Session
The Session is the ruling body of the local church (in this case, Chapelgate). The Session is made up of elected Ruling Elders and the Teaching Elders (Senior and Associate Pastors). The primary responsibility of the Session is the spiritual oversight, or “shepherding” of the congregation. It is responsible for all ministries of the church; and, to see that they are carrying out the Word ministry of Christ. In order to carry out this responsibility in the most efficient manner, the organized ministries and activities of the church are assigned to one of several Session committees which meet separately from the Session as a board.
Board of Deacons
The Board of Deacons is responsible for the administration of the church. The office of Deacon is one of sympathy and service, after the example of the Lord Jesus. The duty of the Deacons is to encourage the congregation to fulfill its’ joint duty to minister to the needy, to the sick, to the friendless, and to those in distress. The Deacons also are charged with the responsibility of developing the grace of liberality in the members of the church; and, with caring for the property of the congregation. The Board of Deacons is under the supervision and guidance of the Session.
